From 20th Century Red Scares to the Blue Scare of Today: A Historical Perspective on the State of American Civil Liberties

December 8, 2025 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

FFSF luncheon - Dec 2025

December 8th from 11:30 pm – 1:00 pm

with author and Professor Emeritus Warren Goldstein

Please register by Monday, December 1st.

Most Americans who care about free speech have at least a passing acquaintance with the Red Scare of the 1950s, known popularly, if inaccurately, as McCarthyism. Fewer know anything about the first Red Scare, launched in 1919-1920 against radicals, socialists, and union activists. In this presentation, US historian Warren Goldstein will try to connect the historical dots of state-sponsored repression of free speech, from the first Red Scare to the current Blue Scare. He promises that this will not simply be an “ain’t it awful” lament, but will also provide hopeful lessons from history that can help us today, in our current multiple crises.
